In another superbly silly scene, he wards off threats from madam Helga (Frank Potente) by snarling: 'You send me 12 men, I will return you 12 sets of testicles. Murder, of course, is the other great taboo and it's made obvious that Delaney is experienced, and skilled, in that too. Transformed by horrific acts, both those inflicted on him and those he inflicted on others, he now indulges in the 'awful and unnatural' – it's clear he feels more than brotherly affection for Zilpha, and tales abound of him devouring human corpses. He is, despite appearances, our hero – just a very unconventional one. Having inherited a strip of land that has since become hugely valuable to the right people, Delaney plans to rally against corruption and the greed of dishonest men. It builds to a spectacular final confrontation between James and the same men who very probably drove his father to insanity and later his grave. A period setting often encourages writers to indulge in a leaden pace, but not Oscar-nominated Knight, who rapidly presents us with a whole host of colourful characters, inhabiting a version of 19th century London that's all grit, grime and grey landscapes.Īs the returned Delaney makes his presence felt – encountering old friends and adversaries – this opening episode rockets along at quite a pace. It's a turn so theatrical, so downright odd that you simply can't look away – and it absolutely sets the tone for the entire series.īecause while Taboo is deeply absurd, never for a single second is it dull. His steely-eyed Delaney communicates as much in grunts as he does in the spoken word. Tom Hardy – never a master of understatement – gives the most Tom Hardy performance of his life. But for all that, it's also supremely watchable. It's melodramatic, stagy and desperately unsubtle throughout.
